Torn Between the Old and the New

The scripture tells us that God is always doing a new thing but we often do not perceive it or hesitate to move even when we are aware of the fact. Amongst the rubble and ashes that we sometimes create of our lives, God creates new beginnings; in essence he gives us a brand new chance to start afresh. But sometimes when God is doing something new, we desperately try to hold on to the old.

Some of us tend to carry our past around unconsciously like a badge of honor. We bring our past into the new things that God is doing and create un-necessary confusion around us. We get angry when really there is nothing to be angry about. We give multiple lame excuses why we should stay where we are and refuse to grab a hold of the lifeline that we so desperately need.

I have had situations when I have prayed for something and when I got my breakthrough, I wasn’t sure if I wanted the answer to my prayer simply because it meant going into something new. I was hesitant because I was familiar with the old. When I remained in the old, I remained in my comfort zone – safe and unadventurous.

Being torn between the old and new could be very dangerous. It could mean allowing our past to interfere with and pollute our future. It could even allow our past – the old to destroy the places our gifts from God can successfully take us. All our past should be successful at doing is ensuring that we do not get caught in the same trap twice, we should never be enslaved to it nor must we allow it do dictate who we are in Jesus Christ.

God is always doing a new thing – even when you cannot perceive it. Let go of the old and move confidently and boldly into the new things God has for you.
