Godly Freedom

“Everything is permissible” – but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible” – but not everything is constructive. – 1 Corinthians 10:23

We live in a world full of options. Having the right to chose is the very foundation on which modern and civilized society is built upon. It is also what is killing the western world slowly and silently. The freedom of choice is only useful to the informed. It is detrimental to the ignorant. Freedom is what allows the rejection of God and consequently promotes godlessness and wickedness. We live in a world where most things are permissible. We have the freedom to do what we like when we like. It is permissible to use drugs but it is certainly not beneficial. It is permissible to do nothing with your life and depend on the state for your needs but it certainly isn’t constructive.

Godly freedom can only be understood from a spiritual perspective. Yes, as believers we are indeed and truly free but we are also guided and restricted by God’s laws. Even though we have the freedom to do whatever we like, we can do what is right because of the Spirit of God that lives in us. We appreciate the freedom that the world allows us but at the same time we live according to the guidance that the Holy Bible gives. Even if the world says that it’s ok to defraud and cheat our way to the top of the career ladder, we chose not to go that route because God’s Word says it’s wrong. Even though society allows us to abandon our families and start new ones whenever we feel like it, we understand what the Bible says about commitment and responsibility because our spirituality is authentic. We measure all our decisions first against the Word of God and any thought or idea that does not measure up is immediately discarded.

God’s freedom makes us exceptionally free but with certain limitations; limitations that are there not to restrict or stop us from having fun but designed to keep our souls, minds and bodies safe. Through the freedom that only God can give, we are able to live the life that He has called us to live – a life full of integrity, a life with uprightness of character and a life where our words match how we live.
