Putting God First

Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart. – Psalm 37:4

In a fast paced world where everything is vying for our attention, putting God first on a daily basis becomes a challenge. We listen to God on the radio on the way to work instead of getting up early for our quiet time. We sing praises to God in the car while we drive as time in the morning is short. Don’t get me wrong, listening to sermons and singing in the car is great but spending time alone with God when absolutely nothing else requires our attention is a must.

To put God first in our lives, we must learn to seek the face of God. How do we do that? We can do that by spending time alone in his presence. Regardless of how busy we are, we must take the time to commune with our Heavenly Father. I know first hand how challenging day-to-day living can get. Between working full-time and single handedly raising my two daughters, finding time to sit still is difficult. But I do my best. You must aim to do your best too.

If we truly desire to put God first, we must believe He is who he says He is. How do we find time in our busy schedules for him if we do not believe in him? We will only take the time and apply the effort if we believe that there is really a return on the investment. Unless we value and see God the way that we ought to, we will not do all we can to put him first in our lives.

What if we have no idea about the plan God has for us? How do we trust in him if we are not knowledgeable about his plan for our lives? How do we trust in a plan that we do not understand? To understand God and his plan for our lives, we must spend time alone in his presence and in his word. To spend consistent time alone with him, we must put God first on a daily basis.

If you believe and trust God but have problems praying and reading your Bible on a consistent basis, there is hope for you. God wants to help you; he wants to draw you close to him. He longs to have an intimate relationship with you. Start by renewing your mind via the word of God. If you are not sure how to pray, try using the Book of Psalms as a start. David was a man who constantly spoke to God; use his words to begin and God will give you wisdom and strength to continue. Most importantly, your mind will be renewed and refreshed on a daily basis via the supernatural power of the Word.

Lastly, we cannot put God first in our lives, if we do not start to walk in obedience to his instructions. God has a unique path for each of us to tread and we can only live according to his will with his help and his guidance.
