In reply, Jesus declared, “I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again.” “How can a man be born when he is old?” Nicodemus asked. “Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother’s womb to be born!”
Jesus answered, “ I tell you the truth, no-one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. You should not be surprised at my saying, ‘You must be born again.’ The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit.”
“How can this be?” Nicodemus asked. ”You are Israel’s teacher,” said Jesus, “and do you not understand these things?” – John 3:3-10
The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. – 1 Corinthians 2:14
The things of the Spirit cannot be understood in the flesh. Nicodemus was a good man. He probably knew the scriptures. Jesus referred to him as Israel’s teacher yet He did not quite understand what Jesus meant what He said one must be born again to see the kingdom of God. When we become born again, God’s Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside of us. With Him comes the spirit of discernment. We are able to understand and accept the things that come from the Spirit of God.
Why do you think some people find it hard to accept the things of God? It’s not because they are stupid or non-intellectuals. It’s simply because the things of God cannot be grasped via a natural mind. It takes the interpretation and the presence of the Holy Spirit for man to fully comprehend what God is trying to say. Natural birth comes from Adam but spiritual birth comes as a result of the price Jesus Christ paid at the Cross of Calvary.
Spiritual things sound foolish to people who are devoid of the Spirit of God. It sounds foolish because it can never be understood via a logical or intellectual mindset. It can only be appreciated and enjoyed via a spiritual mind – a mind and heart that is filled with the Holy Ghost. If you are interested in understanding what God is saying, give your life to Him so that you can experience the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in your life to direct and guide you.
